A few weeks ago, after Jeremiah’s last class EVER, we hit the road for a long weekend with my grandparents in Kerrville. They live in a beautiful ranch-style house that they built themselves in their retirement years. I especially love the front doorstep:
Pop laid the saltillo tile himself (Dad helped him for a few days, and said it was back-breaking work). My Pop is an Air Force veteran, a retired farmer, a painter, a woodworker, a guacamole chef, and an onion lover (and connoisseur):
He puts onions in everything – and used to give my teething cousins green onions to gnaw. He’s also addicted to Blue Bell, a heck of a dominoes player, and a master of dry wit.
As usual, we cooked and ate ALL weekend – a whole roast dinner, sandwiches, enchiladas, ice cream, chocolate-chip cookies (a staple in this house) and strawberry shortcake, made with love:
(Pop made the cutting board, too.)
These are the grandparents who lived in Ohio when I was young – their old farm is the site of many happy memories. But I have loved seeing them more often since they moved to Texas 12 years ago. Whenever we spend time together, I feel so utterly, completely taken care of and loved. And Jeremiah doesn’t have any grandparents, so I’m even more grateful that they’re adopted him as one of their own.
This is my Neno. She’s beautiful, no? I hope I look that good – and still have as big a heart and as hilarious a sense of humor – as she when I’m that age.
SO beautiful! I loved reading this.
I love this post about your grandparents. And your grandmother IS beautiful. My Love Thursday is about my grandma too.
Katie, they sound great! I’ve always felt lucky, too, to have grandparents who make me feel loved and proffer scrumptious morsels.
Also: love your earrings in that photo!
What a lovely post. btw, your beautiful grandmother looks like you.
She is stunning and you look so much alike! I’m so jealous that your grandparents live nearby.
Mine have all passed away now and I miss them so much.
