It’s no secret I’ve been fighting the midwinter blues lately. Although we’ve had mild temps and hardly any snow (so far) this winter, this is still the time when tights and scarves and sweaters start to pall a bit. I’ve worn all my cute winter outfits (and mixed the pieces around to create new ones), drunk copious amounts of tea, and had my fill of hearty soups featuring winter produce. Something in me is longing for spring, for stalks of shocking-pink rhubarb and softer breezes, for flowers (in the park and on my clothes), for the reappearance of light jackets and farmer’s markets and ballet flats. (I’ve seen hardy Northeasterners in lighter layers and even shoes with no socks lately – but for me it’s all boots, all the time, till the mercury rises higher.)
However, I did finally finish a knitting project – a sumptuous, soft, squishy cowl, as green as Ireland, with the two skeins of Manos del Uruguay Maxima I bought at Purl Soho in January. (The first time I visited Allison in New York, we misjudged our travel time and arrived at Purl twenty minutes after it closed – so we made it a priority to get there this last time.)
My new Millwater cowl isn’t curing my winter blues entirely, but it’s a shot of joyous color, a cozy hug around my neck, and a reminder that eventually, this shade of green will return to the parks in Boston, though they’re currently hovering between faded brown and gray.
What colors keep your outlook bright in the middle of winter?
Hm, I’ve never really lived through a long winter. I lived in TX for 9 years, and AZ for the other 20, so no lengthy coldness for me.
Especially now living in southern AZ, “winter” is usually about three weeks long, and I get all excited to be able to wear scarves and jackets. (Because most of the year you can get by with a sweatshirt.) I have a turquoise and a lime green scarf, and I equally love them both. 🙂
I just bought a kelly green crossbody handbag over the weekend. We must be on the same wavelength! It makes me smile 🙂
Ooh I love that kelly green! I feel like I’ve been doing the opposite … wearing a color palette that reflects this wintry mood … greys and black and silver and pale, icy blues. This season I’m really into orange, though. My daily planner is a citrus orange, and I’ve been hunting for the perfect orange shirt to wear with tan and camel colors.
I’m feeling the same way lately! I bought a yellow t-shirt from Old Navy yesterday to brighten things up!
Green is always my color! (And all this rain has returned green to Houston with a vengeance lately.) As you know, winter blues are a little different down here, but that doesn’t mean they’re not here… yea, green year-round for me, please. 🙂 LOVE your new cowl!
That’s a lovely color of green, Katie!
Love this colour green. Even more, I love your description of it, as green as Ireland. Perfection.
I tend to pinks and turquoise to give an unexpected pop to winter greys and blacks. Maybe it’s because I wear so much green, in different shades, year ’round. Pink is doing it for me this year.
That is a gorgeous shade of green, Katie! Suits you very well. Here in New Zealand we are slap bang in the middle of summer, but in six weeks it will start feeling like autumn and then I’ll be sad. Winters where I am aren’t too harsh, but they’re damp and windy, and my spirits flag pretty badly. This year I’m going to make a plan for keeping away the winter blues. Good luck – I’m sure spring won’t be too far away for you now.
That is a beautiful color! It should definitely cheer you up 😉
my favourite colour is green so I kinda want to steal your cowl right now 🙂 it’s such a happy colour
