When I turned 28 in September, I made a list of things to do before I turn 29. I am making slow but steady progress, and I am also feeling totally brain-dead this week, so I thought I’d share my second update with you.
Also, this photo is making me happy: it’s artsy, it’s green, and it includes the latest Maisie book, which I recently read and loved. (And, lacking a list-making photo, this is a good substitute; I often make lists sitting in cafes, sipping hot tea or chai lattes.)
(Finished items are crossed off; items begun are starred*.)
1. Try the Project Life system to document either my time in Oxford or our first year in Boston
2. Go to New York to see Ben in The Lion King and visit friends (Totally fabulous weekend – and the show rocked!)
3. Plan a trip to Europe/Oxford
4. Hang out with my family in Texas (So. Much. Fun.)
5. Dig into some classics I’ve never read (so far, Murder on the Orient Express, Essays of E.B. White, Letters to a Young Poet, A Christmas Carol, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, The Great Gatsby, Northanger Abbey)
6. Visit a place I’ve never been (Portland, ME; Marblehead, Amherst, Hingham, Newton Highlands & Newtonville, MA)
7. Clean out my desk at home, currently full of stuff I don’t use*
8. Visit my loves in Abilene (pure joy)
9. Go apple picking again (it was delectable)
10. Knit some swoon-worthy autumn accessories (Done.)
11. Buy a new pair of black high-heeled boots (Bought riding boots instead. LOVE them.)
12. Keep in better touch with far-away friends (stolen from Bethany’s list)* (Up and down. But I’m trying.)
13. Explore more of New England (see #6)
14. Try at least 2 new recipes a month* (averaging 3 or 4 so far!)
15. Visit half a dozen area bookstores I haven’t been to yet (Done! Longfellow Books, Porter Square Books, Artists & Authors, Spirit of ’76 Bookstore, Amherst Books, the New England Mobile Book Fair and Newtonville Books)
16. Go see The Civil Wars in concert with my Jeremiah (a lovely evening)
17. Take another writing course (I took Alchemy Daily with Jenna)
18. Take a financial management course with J (we learned a lot)
19. Put together new outfits from pieces I already own
20. Schedule a checkup (it’s been far too long)
21. Start or join a book club* (Julie and I have gathered our friends. First meeting is set for March.)
22. Buy a sassy red handbag
23. Drive up to New Hampshire or Vermont to see the fall foliage (We drove to western Mass.)
24. Fill a new notebook with a super-secret writing project
25. Get a Massachusetts driver’s license
26. Learn to pay attention to one thing at a time* (This is not going well.)
27. Send 28 handwritten letters (Christmas cards don’t count)* (About halfway there.)
28. Go to a literary festival/conference/event (Boston Book Fest, multiple author readings, signed up for the Glen Workshop East)
I love this list! Much more literary than most bucket lists! I especially love the apple picking, fall foliage and visiting new bookstores. I had start a book club on my list too and I just started a book club/poetry salon in Brooklyn.
Wonderful list! Enjoy your 20’s they go by so quickly…
This is so inspiring – what progress you’ve made. I live two blocks from Porter Square Books – next time let me know when you are here! 🙂
xo
Ps. I love the name and theme of your blog!
So much of modern culture fixates in self improvement and impossible resolutions rather than self- indulgence, contentment and peace. We should all have these types of lists.
Just rememembered learning to snorkel was another item on my list and just did that for first time in Florida keys, and have now gone out five times and seen the most remarkable fish and coral.
Cheers,
Emily
You are doing AMAZING! You’re totally going to complete this list. 🙂
Speaking of classics you’ve never read, I stumbled upon one lately that fascinated me. The Blythes are Quoted, a mysterious collection of Glenn St. Mary short stories interspersed with vignettes of Anne and Gilbert Blythe’s family life,is a book I have long wished existed but only recently found. The short stories seemed a bit darker than L.M. Montgomery’s usual fare, but the vignettes were a welcome return to Ingleside!
You have had such a busy, fun year! I love your letter goal. I’d like to tackle that challenge soon myself.
What a great idea!
