After nearly a decade as a knitter and three winters in Boston, I’ve accumulated quite a pile of winter accessories: scarves, fingerless gloves, lots of hats. But as the gray-edged piles of snow linger and the cold temps refuse to rise, I keep knitting more of them. My two most recent projects are getting lots of use.
First we have Rosebud:
I coveted this pattern for ages, finally bought it and promptly knitted it up in yellow – but it turned out way too big. So I tried again with this lovely purple skein of Madelinetosh Vintage. The colorway is called “Flashdance,” which suggests ’80s neon, but the color is rich and deep. It’s warm and cozy and I’ve been wearing it almost every day. I love the big braid on the side. (Ravelled here.)
My favorite yarn shop, the Windsor Button, is closing (sad day), so I stopped by the clearance sale and picked up a few skeins of yarn. My new gray Fluted Cowl is made of two skeins of Cascade 128 Superwash Chunky. (I wish I’d had three, but there were only two skeins on the shelf.) It, too, is warm and cozy, either worn long or doubled up around my neck. (Ravelled here.)
If winter’s still lingering where you are, what are you wearing to keep warm? (And when, for heaven’s sake, will it be spring?)
I’m currently making a lacy tablecloth (small, only a little over 2.5 feet in diameter) from a pattern I found on Ravelry. It was created based on a doily and looks it. It’s my first knitted doily-based pattern. I’m having a bit of an adventure with it, as I decided to go a bit off-pattern to make it bigger and use as much of my lace-weight wool as possible. I might have to take out about 15 rounds and try part of it again. I’m so OCD, it’s heartbreaking sometimes.
Also, I recently finished some cute fingerless mitts in a lovely green sportweight wool (I think it was alpaca). They match a sweater I tried. The sweater’s a bit too short, and looks extremely homemade (I think it’s the weight of the yarn and the size of the needles, even though I followed the pattern), and I’m putting off finishing it (i.e. putting on buttons and weaving in all ends). I’ve been having quite a time with some of my experiments lately, huh? I think I should stick to hats, gloves, socks, and doilies, and leave the sweaters to someone else.
I’ve had trouble with sweaters, too. Hence my growing pile of accessories! And that doily tablecloth sounds ambitious…good luck!
We had a lovely week of spring, and then back to cold drabness. However, it *is* Georgia, so our cold and drab doesn’t really call for much more than a cardigan and closed-toe shoes. Still, I’m ready for nicer weather to come back!
I envy all your pretty knitteds…our weather doesn’t really give us much need for more than scarves. But, a few hats and a lovely cowl could be in my future!
In northern New York it has snowed at least once a day since the first day of spring and I love it!
Gorgeous! Love the colors in that hat. I’m about 75% done with another Peanut sweater, then it’s a hat for me too.
