My name is Katie and I am a stationery addict.
I have a whole drawer in my desk dedicated to notecards, spare pens, stickers and envelope seals. (There’s a separate drawer for notebooks and notepads.) I have a snail mail pen pal with whom I exchange long, newsy handwritten letters. And despite the fact that I didn’t manage to send out Christmas cards this year, I think handwritten notes are always a good idea.
I’ve been looking for a challenge to pep up February – since the shortest month can feel awfully long when you’re caught in the grip of a New England winter. Since Valentine’s Day falls in February, it seemed like the perfect time to write love notes – not just to my husband (though he’s definitely on my list), but to lots of the people I care about. So, this month, I’m writing one snail mail love note a day.
This project will force me to use my stash of stationery and notecards instead of hoarding them, and I’m hoping my increasingly chicken-scratch handwriting will improve with a bit of practice. And, of course, I hope my loved ones will smile when they open up the mailbox and see a note from me.
The month has already started, and so far I’m right on target. (Here’s hoping I don’t lose steam after Valentine’s Day has come and gone.)
What are you doing to make February a little brighter? Want to join me in writing a few love notes?
I like stationery too — all the infinite possibilities for creativity! There is a great store called The Paper Source in my area and I love to wander around in there. Ever been there?
Hello Katie.
Love notes to loved ones and maybe even strangers could be a lot of fun but first I have to de-clutter my handbag.
It is ladden with loads of notebooks, each one with a different purpose “apparently”.So as you can imagine, I may soon need a back operation because the weight just gets too much at times, but i seem to have separation issues…….Heeeeeeelp!
I am also a stationery addict. I never saw a clearance notepad or card and envelope pack that I didn’t like. This is a great idea for what to do with them!
This is a brilliant idea – I, too, am a terrible stationery hoarder. I’m going to make a point to send some out this month (maybe not every day, but SOME!).
I love pens and paper. I also love the thought of having another pen pal. If you wouldn’t take this as creepy, would you like to take up being pen pals with each other?
Since I didn’t send out Christmas cards this year, I had decided to send each person on my list a hand written note during Lent. Since I have more that 40 people on my list, I will join you in the month of February.
Stationery is the best! It’s so pretty and delicate. It’s always fun to receive (or send) a hand written note. I really like your idea for Valentine’s Day…
I love this idea. Letter writing is a lost art.
This is brilliant!! Have you ever read The Gift of a Letter? I read it a long time ago, so I don’t know for sure how well it would hold up. But it’s about how much more beautiful a handwritten letter can be. I’m pretty sure you would agree with every word in it. I have a drawer like this, too, although it’s gotten awfully low and I do not use it nearly enough. Inside it, I even have a wax stick and personalized seal that I have never used because it’s so beautiful just to look at it and imagine using it! You have re-inspired me to one day actually use it. I love your lovely, intentional approach to life. It’s such a bright spot!
Great idea. I used to write letters so much more than I do now. I love stationery and notebooks too. I’m trying to write more often to my mom who loves to get mail. Who doesn’t? I also started writing to my 10 year old niece so that maybe she will continue the age old practice of writing letters. I don’t want it to be lost forever, so I better practice what I preach. Nice thoughts. Thanks.
What a lovely idea! I love exchanging letters with you, and I love your stationary choices.
I’ve been doing something similar — I’ve been writing a note to everyone we got a Christmas card from. We choose one each evening with dinner and pray for that family. Then we write them a little note saying we had prayed for their family. It’s been such a good excuse to use up my hoard of stationary.
